Mojave Desert Tortoise
Gopherus agassizii
Description: A high domed, flat-topped shell with large scutes. The carapace, head, limbs and tail are tan, brown, or grayish-brown in color. The plastron is yellow or tan in color. The scutes are typically light-centered in juveniles. Large flat rear feet and flattened forelimbs with thick scales. The head is round and the neck is short. Males have well developed gular shields, chin glands, a concave carapace, and a thicker tail.
Size: A large-sized tortoise with an average shell length of 12 to 14 inches.
Range and Habitat: This tortoise occurs in Southern Washington County. It inhabits Mojave desertscrub and creosote bush-dominated basins. It can be found up to 4,000 feet in elevation.
Similar Species: This turtle is easily recognizable as the only native and terrestrial species in the state, distinguishing it from all other aquatic introduced turtles.
