Long-nosed Leopard Lizard
Gambelia wislizenii
Description: This lizard has two main patterns and color variations. The first is a gray, tan, cream, or yellow base color with numerous dark brown or black spots that vary in size along the dorsal and sides. The second is a dark gray base color with thin white or cream horizontal stripes across the dorsal. Some individuals can exhibit both. The throat has gray streaks. The tail is about twice the length of the body and is rounded. The scales are small and granular. Females develop bright orange coloration on their heads, bodies, and the underside of the tail during breeding season. Juveniles have more distinct dorsal banding with red-orange spots.
Size: A large-bodied lizard averaging 10-12 inches in total length.
Range and Habitat: This lizard occurs through three major ecoregions in Utah: the Great Basin, Mojave Desert, and the Colorado Plateau. It inhabits desertscrub, and grasslands with flat open areas. It can be found below 6,000 feet in elevation.
Similar Species: The Northern Desert Iguana has a blunt head, light colored spots, and a vertebral crest.
