Northern Desert Horned Lizard
Phrynosoma platyrhinos platyrhinos
Description: Tan, brown, cream, or gray base color; often closely matching the surrounding substrate. Orange coloration is often present on the lower sides. A pair of dark blotches on the back of the neck. A row of paired irregular wavy blotches runs along the dorsal. The blotches are often edged in white or cream. The tail is shorter than the body length and can appear banded. The body is flat, wide, and rounded. Spine-like scales cover the body with a single fringe of these scales running along the lower sides. The horns on the back of the head are well-developed. The two central horns are the longest and do not contact each other at the base. The snout is blunt.
Size: A small heavy-bodied lizard averaging 4 to 5 inches in total length.
Range and Habitat: This subspecies occurs through the western half of the state in the Great Basin. It inhabits deserscrub with open flat and gravelly areas. It can be found below 6,000 feet in elevation.
Similar Species: The Greater Short-horned Lizard has short horns and a notch at the back of the head forming a heart shape when viewed from above.
