Salamanders of Utah

Salamanders are a type of amphibian that superficially resemble lizards. They are scaleless and have moist skin, like frogs. There is only one species of salamander in Utah, the Western Tiger Salamander, which belongs to the family Ambystomatidae (Mole Salamanders). These salamanders typically have three life stages, which include an egg stage, an aquatic larval stage, and a terrestrial adult stage. However, some may attain sexual maturity in their larval form and never metamorphose to their terrestrial adult stage. This is known as paedomorphism.
