Valley Garter Snake
Thamnophis sirtalis fitchi
Mildly Venomous – Harmless
Description: The base color is dark brown or black with a well-defined yellow middorsal stripe and yellow lateral stripes along each side. Varying degrees of red come up from the lateral stripes along the body. This snake has keeled scales and 7 upper labial (lip) scales.
Size: A medium-sized snake averaging 2 to 3 feet in length.
Venom: Garter snakes can produce a mild venom that is considered medically insignificant. The venom is used to subdue prey and is typically harmless to humans, although it may cause mild irritation in some individuals.
Range and Habitat: This snake occurs in the valleys of Northern Utah. It is typically found close to water and inhabits wetlands, marshes, and riparian corridors. It is most commonly encountered from the valley floors to about 6,000 feet in elevation.
Similar Species: The Wandering Garter Snake lacks red coloration and has 8 upper labial (lip) scales. The Black-necked Garter Snake lacks red coloration, has distinct neck blotching, and does not overlap in range.
