Wandering Garter Snake
Thamnophis elegans vagrans
Mildly Venomous – Harmless
Description: Base color is shades of brown, tan, olive, or gray. It has a light cream, yellow, tan, olive, or gray middorsal stripe and a lateral stripe on each side. These stripes can be poorly defined or absent in some individuals. It has alternating black spots that run along the dorsal and sides in a checkered pattern. These spots can also be poorly defined or absent. This snake has keeled scales and 8 upper labial (lip) scales. This is one of Utah’s most commonly encountered snakes.
Size: A medium-sized snake averaging 1.5 to 2.5 feet in length.
Range and Habitat: This snake can be found throughout the majority of the state. It is considered to be a generalist and can be found in nearly every type of habit outside of extremely arid regions. It is commonly associated with water however, it can be found far from any kind of water source. This snake has been found at over 10,000 feet in elevation.
Similar Species: The Valley Garter Snake has red on its sides and 7 upper labial (lip) scales. The Black-necked Garter Snake has a distinct dorsal stripe and larger more defined neck blotches.
